What is wainscoting?

Architecture that finishes a room

Wainscoting is decorative panelling installed on the lower portion of a wall — sometimes the full wall — built from rails, stiles, and recessed panels. Originally added centuries ago to protect plaster from chair backs, it's now one of the most powerful ways to add depth, rhythm, and architectural weight to any room. From classic chair-rail layouts to full-wall picture-frame designs, wainscoting transforms ordinary drywall into a finished, designed space.

From homes in Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, and Scarborough to new builds across Vaughan, Woodbridge, Markham, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Mississauga, Oakville, Pickering, and Ajax — our installers fit wainscoting across the wider GTA.

Six signature styles

Find the wainscoting for your home

Every project starts with a conversation about which style fits your space. Here are the layouts we install most often across Toronto and the GTA — each with its own character and best-fit rooms.

Classic picture-frame wainscoting with chair rail in a Toronto home by Expert Crown Moulding

Classic picture-frame wainscoting

The traditional look: panel-moulding rectangles applied below a chair rail, set at around 38–42 inches up the wall. It's the most versatile wainscoting style and works in almost any home, from a formal dining room to an entryway or hallway. We calculate the panel sizes and spacing to your exact wall, so the proportions land right rather than coming as a fixed kit. Built in primed MDF and painted to your colour — tone-on-tone with the wall for a quiet, built-in look, or a contrast colour to make it stand out.

Full-wall picture-frame wainscoting from baseboard to ceiling by Expert Crown Moulding

Full-wall picture-frame wainscoting

One of our most-requested styles right now. Instead of stopping at the chair rail, the picture-frame panels continue above it as well, so framed moulding covers the wall from baseboard to ceiling. The result is a grand, finished look that suits living rooms, dining rooms, and stairwells. We proportion the upper and lower panels to your wall and ceiling height so everything lines up cleanly. Primed MDF, paint-ready.

Full-wall MDF paneling with no chair rail in a modern GTA living room by Expert Crown Moulding

Full-wall paneling

One of the most popular options right now, alongside full-wall picture-frame. It's similar, but without the chair rail dividing the wall — clean framed panels running the full height, or in some rooms a single tall panel spanning floor to ceiling. It reads more modern and seamless than the framed-and-railed look, and it's a strong choice for a feature wall or a contemporary space. As with all our work, we calculate the layout to your exact wall so the panels space evenly. Primed MDF, paint-ready.

Staircase wainscoting following the stair rake by Expert Crown Moulding

Staircase wainscoting

Wainscoting that follows the rake of your stairs — either a chair-rail picture-frame version or a Shaker grid, depending on the look you want. It's one of the highest-impact upgrades in a home, turning a plain stairwell into a finished architectural feature. Each panel is measured and cut on site to follow the angle of the staircase precisely. Primed MDF, paint-ready.

Full-height stair paneling running up the stairwell by Expert Crown Moulding

Full stair paneling

Paneling that runs all the way up the stairwell wall, full height rather than stopping at a rail. It pairs especially well with full-wall wainscoting on the adjoining walls, carrying the same panelled look continuously from your hallway up the stairs. A bold, cohesive choice for an open stairwell or a two-storey entry. We size and cut every piece on site to the stair angle. Primed MDF, paint-ready.

Shaker wainscoting with a flat-panel grid in a modern bedroom by Expert Crown Moulding

Shaker wainscoting

A clean grid of flat vertical and horizontal rails dividing the wall into simple, even panels — no decorative profile, just balanced proportion. It comes from Shaker furniture, where the appeal is restraint, and it reads modern and calm, which is why it suits bedrooms, offices, and entryways. Tighter grids feel more traditional; wider, larger panels lean contemporary. Built on site in primed MDF, painted to your colour, sized to your wall rather than forced into a standard panel.

How it works

From consultation to finished walls

Our wainscoting installation is built around three clear stages — designed to be efficient, transparent, and as easy on you as possible. Most rooms go from blank drywall to finished panelled walls in 1–3 days.

01
Consultation
We come to your home, measure every wall, and walk you through which wainscoting style suits your space — chair rail, full-wall, picture frame, shaker, or staircase. You leave the consultation with a clear, transparent estimate and a layout plan, no guesswork.
02
Install day
Our experienced team arrives on time, protects your floors and furniture, and sets up the cutting station outside in your garage or driveway. Most rooms are panelled, trimmed, and capped in 1–3 days — with full-wall and staircase projects taking the upper end of that range.
03
Finishing touches
Once the panels are up, we fill every nail hole, sand the joints, and caulk every seam for a seamless, paint-ready finish. Your wainscoting arrives primed in white — your painter can move straight to colour without any additional prep work.

"Arnie did an amazing job with my wall moulding. I wanted my upstairs hallway done, he was very time efficient and understood my idea right away. As well as provided me with various options and examples of his previous work. He is an expert, I expected him to take longer but he finished the job incredibly quick. I would highly recommend for any moulding and I will definitely be contacting him in the future!"

"Expert Crown Moulding team is amazing! Arnie, Ivan, and his team were so experienced, high-skilled, and precise in their crown moulding and wainscoting design. Everyone knew their role and expertise and they worked together so seamlessly and efficiently as a team. They made sure their work area is always clean and tidy throughout the day. All cutting work was done on site and outside the home so there's absolutely no dust inside. They put things away and swept the floor thoroughly at the end of each day. They were very honest in their feedbacks and would advise us not to do any extra trim work if they felt it wouldn't look good. Their work made our home looks so beautiful and new. It's worth every penny! The entire team is extremely professional, diligent, patient, and accommodating. We highly recommend this team and would definitely hire them again for our next trim project."

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does a wainscoting installation take?+
It depends on the style and the wall area. Picture-frame wainscoting is usually a single day; full-wall picture-frame runs one to two days; and panelled MDF wainscoting takes two to four days, since each board is cut and joined for a seamless finish. Chair-rail and staircase work fall in between. We'll give you a firm timeline at the consultation.
What's the difference between wainscoting, beadboard, and shiplap?+
Wainscoting is the umbrella term for any decorative wall panelling installed on the lower portion (or full height) of a wall. Beadboard is a vertical-groove panelling style often used in cottages and bathrooms. Shiplap is horizontal overlapping boards. We install all three — plus shaker, picture-frame, and traditional raised-panel styles.
How much does wainscoting cost in Toronto and the GTA?+
Wainscoting in Toronto and the GTA can start as low as $700 — for example, picture-frame wainscoting with a chair rail in a standard dining room — while shaker or panelled wainscoting runs $2,000 or more depending on the design and detailing. Final pricing depends on the wall area, the style you choose, and the complexity (chair-rail vs. full-wall vs. staircase). Every quote is transparent and itemized, with materials, labour, and finishing clearly broken down. Contact us for a free in-home consultation and detailed estimate.
What height should the wainscoting cap rail be?+
The classic chair-rail height is 32–36 inches — roughly one-third the wall height. For taller walls (9–10 ft) or full-wall installs, the cap can sit higher (around two-thirds) to balance the proportions. We measure your room during the consultation and recommend the height that suits the ceiling, baseboard, and door casings.
Can wainscoting work in bathrooms and kitchens?+
Absolutely — in fact, beadboard and shaker wainscoting are favourites in bathrooms, mudrooms, and kitchens. We use moisture-resistant MDF and seal every joint and seam so the panelling holds up beautifully in humid spaces. A coat of semi-gloss paint makes it easy to wipe clean.
Do you handle outlets, switches, and trim transitions?+
Yes. We calculate the exact panel layout before cutting, so outlets, switches, vents, baseboards, and door casings are all planned in advance and the panel grid lines up cleanly. We extend electrical boxes where needed so cover plates sit flush with the new panel surface.
Will wainscoting come ready to paint?+
Yes. All wainscoting arrives primed in white. Once we've installed it, we fill every nail hole, sand the joints, and caulk every seam for a seamless, paint-ready finish. Your painter can move straight to colour without any additional prep work.
What warranty do you provide?+
We back every wainscoting installation with a lifetime workmanship warranty. With over 20 years of experience and a commitment to precision, our work is built to last — and if anything we installed needs attention, we'll make it right.
