Why a feature wall matters
An accent wall is the fastest way to take a room from flat and forgettable to designed and intentional. One wall — picture frame moulding, shaker panels, board and batten, a bold geometric pattern, classic shiplap, or modern slat — and the entire room gets a focal point. Whether it's a primary bedroom in Vaughan, a dining room in Richmond Hill, or a downtown Toronto condo, the right feature wall transforms how a home feels to live in and how it shows when you have guests over.
Six signature styles
From classic picture frame moulding to bold geometric patterns, we install six core feature wall styles across Toronto and the GTA. Each one can be customized with variations, finishes, and colours to match your space. Tap any style below to see options.
Timeless panel moulding rectangles. Classic elegance for living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways.
Clean lines and even spacing. Modern minimalism for bedrooms, offices, and entryways.
Vertical battens with classic depth. Farmhouse charm and architectural texture.
Chevron, herringbone, hexagon, custom patterns. Bold modern statements.
Horizontal or vertical planking. Modern farmhouse and coastal warmth.
Vertical wood or MDF slats. Sleek, contemporary depth for any modern interior.
Style 01 — Classic elegance
A picture frame feature wall uses applied panel moulding to create a series of evenly proportioned rectangles across the wall — the classic look you see in formal living rooms, dining rooms, and primary bedrooms across Toronto and the GTA. The technique is rooted in traditional wainscoting but installed at full wall height, turning a flat builder-grade surface into something with depth, rhythm, and architectural intention. It works in almost any home style, from a heritage Toronto semi to a modern Richmond Hill new build, because the proportions can be tuned to match your room's scale.
Variations come down to layout and finish. We design panel sizes and spacing to suit your wall — single tall rectangles, double rows, mixed proportions, or ceiling-height floor-to-trim layouts — and pair them with chair rail when the room calls for it. All panels are paint-grade primed MDF with crisp mitred corners and tight reveals. Most clients paint the panels and wall the same colour for a tone-on-tone effect that reads expensive and quiet, but a contrast colour inside the panels turns the same wall into a much louder statement. We'll walk you through the options at consultation.

Style 02 — Modern minimal
Shaker feature walls use a clean grid of vertical and horizontal stiles to break the wall into evenly spaced flat panels. The design comes from Shaker furniture and cabinetry — simple, balanced, no decoration for its own sake — and translates beautifully into modern Vaughan, Markham, and downtown Toronto interiors. It's a popular choice for primary bedrooms behind the bed, home offices, entryways, and any space where you want presence without ornament. Shaker reads as calm and intentional, which is exactly why designers reach for it when a room needs depth without busy detail.
The variations are about scale and proportion. Tighter grids with smaller panels create a more detailed, traditional feel; wider open grids with larger panels lean modern and architectural. We can run shaker the full wall, half-wall as a wainscoting alternative, or stop it at picture-rail height for a hybrid look. All stiles are flat-stock MDF, mitred and joined for clean intersections, primed white and ready for paint. Same-colour-as-wall finish keeps it subtle; a contrast colour or wallpaper inside the panels turns it into a feature.

Style 03 — Architectural texture
Board and batten is the vertical-batten cousin of shaker — strips of trim applied vertically over a flat wall, usually with a wider horizontal cap rail across the top. The look originated in early American farmhouse construction and has carried through to modern coastal, modern farmhouse, and contemporary GTA interiors. It's a workhorse style that adds architectural texture to mudrooms, dining rooms, primary bedrooms, and stairwells without competing visually with the rest of the room. The vertical lines also have a quiet effect of making ceilings feel taller — a useful trick in standard 8-foot rooms.
Variations come from batten width, spacing, and height. Narrow battens with tight spacing create a refined, contemporary look; wider battens with more breathing room read traditional and farmhouse. We typically run board and batten as a half-wall (chair-rail height) with a top cap and hooks, or full-height for a more dramatic effect. A picture rail above the cap adds another layer of detail when the ceiling is tall enough to support it. All construction is paint-grade MDF, primed white, ready for paint.

Style 04 — Bold modern statement
Geometric feature walls are where we get to be designers more than installers. Chevron, herringbone, hexagon, V-pattern, wave, and fully custom angled designs — these walls turn a single surface into the unmistakable focal point of the room. They work best in rooms that already have strong architectural bones (high ceilings, good light, simple furniture) so the wall can carry the visual load without competing. We've installed geometric walls behind beds, behind TVs, in dining rooms, and in offices across Vaughan, Richmond Hill, and Toronto — each one custom-designed to the room's proportions and the homeowner's vision.
Pattern selection drives everything. Chevron and herringbone are clean and structured; wave patterns are softer and more sculptural; hexagons and custom geometries can range from subtle to bold depending on scale. We mock up the pattern at full wall scale before any cuts are made — graph-paper layout, photo overlays, or sample boards depending on complexity — so you see exactly what you're getting. Construction is paint-grade MDF with hand-mitred angles for tight joints. Same-colour finish keeps the focus on the pattern's shadow lines; high-contrast paint pushes it to a much louder statement.

Style 05 — Modern farmhouse warmth
Shiplap is horizontal (or vertical) tongue-and-groove planking applied across a feature wall — the look that defines modern farmhouse and coastal interiors and that has earned a permanent place in mainstream Toronto and GTA design. It adds horizontal rhythm and visible texture without being overwhelming, which is why it works in so many room types: bedrooms behind the bed, living rooms behind a fireplace, mudrooms, bathrooms, kitchens. Shiplap is the most "warmth on demand" of all the feature wall styles — it makes a room feel cozier the moment it's installed, even before paint goes on.
Orientation is the first decision: horizontal is the modern farmhouse classic, vertical reads more contemporary and lifts the ceiling visually. Plank width is the second — narrower planks for a refined look, wider planks for a more rustic feel. Painted white is the most-requested finish in the GTA, but stained real-wood shiplap on a single accent wall turns the same room in a completely different direction. We install MDF for paint-grade work and solid wood when staining or natural finishes are required, with reveal gaps cut consistently for that signature shiplap shadow line.

Style 06 — Sleek contemporary depth
Slat walls are vertical (occasionally horizontal) wood or MDF strips installed at consistent spacing across the wall, creating depth, shadow, and a strong contemporary aesthetic that's been one of the most-requested feature walls of the last few years. They're the design choice for behind-the-bed headboard walls, behind TVs, in primary bedrooms, and in modern offices throughout Toronto, Vaughan, and Markham. The slats add genuine three-dimensional depth — a real shadow line, a tactile surface — that flat panel styles can't match, which is why interior designers reach for them when a room needs warmth and dimension without ornament.
The biggest decision is material. MDF slats painted any colour are clean, modern, and the most cost-effective; solid wood slats stained walnut, white oak, or ash bring genuine wood grain and natural warmth that paint can't replicate. Spacing tunes the look — tight for a refined dense pattern, open for a more architectural feel. We can integrate TV mounts, picture lights, sconces, or LED backlighting into the design so the finished wall looks intentional, not improvised. Vertical orientation is the standard; horizontal slats work too for a different visual rhythm.

Materials & Finish
MDF is our standard for paint-grade feature walls — Canadian-made, dimensionally stable, and engineered to take paint beautifully. It's the right material for picture frame, shaker, board and batten, and most geometric designs. Every piece arrives primed white, with nail holes filled and seams caulked, ready for your painter to go straight to colour. Solid wood is the choice when you want a natural-grain stain finish — most common on slat walls and shiplap, where the wood itself is the design statement. We work with paint-grade MDF profiles for the polished modern look that suits most GTA homes, and source real-wood stock (white oak, walnut, ash) when the project calls for it.
Why choose us
When you choose Expert Crown Moulding for your feature wall, you're getting a family-run finish carpentry team with 20+ years of experience designing and installing custom accent walls across Toronto and the GTA. Here's what you can expect from us:
A father-and-sons crew with 20+ years of finish carpentry and feature wall design across the GTA. Every feature wall we install — every mitred corner, every reveal, every grid intersection — gets the same attention we'd give our own homes. Feature walls are detail work. The difference between a wall that reads custom and one that reads DIY is in the joints, the spacing, and the layout decisions made before a single piece of trim is cut. That's where a family crew with two decades of practice matters most.
Choosing a feature wall is the part most homeowners get stuck on — which style suits the room, what proportions work with the ceiling height, whether the same colour or a contrast colour will land. We bring 20+ years of design experience to every consultation, walking your space with you, planning the exact layout and panel sizes for your wall, and showing you sample boards so you can see real materials in your room's light. There's no extra fee for this — it's how we think every feature wall project should start.
Feature wall installation should leave your room better than we found it, not worse. We protect floors with drop cloths, set up our cutting station outside in your garage or driveway whenever possible, and contain the work area before any cuts are made. Adjacent walls and furniture get covered. Once the install is done, we vacuum, wipe surfaces, and walk through the space with you before we leave. No sawdust on your hardwood, no debris on your carpet, no stress for you.
Every feature wall we install is backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty. Properly installed trim doesn't pull away, develop gaps, or show seams down the road — but if anything we installed ever does, we come back and make it right. With 20+ years of finish carpentry experience and the right materials and fastening for every wall, our work is built to last decades. The warranty applies for as long as you own your home — no fine print, no claim forms, just a phone call.
